Task force charts growing interest in civilian maritime nuclear applications
Readers of Nuclear News will have heard of historical applications of civilian maritime nuclear power, like the merchant ship NS Savannah and the USS Sturgis floating power plant. With a few exceptions there has been little action in this area for over 50 years, and there are plenty of reasons and opinions as to why, but over the last few years the dramatic increase in interest from the maritime industry and its stakeholders has been undeniable.

Thomas M. Evans is a distinguished R&D staff member and the group leader of the HPC Methods for Nuclear Applications group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycles Division at ORNL. He has a PhD in nuclear engineering (1997) and MS in health physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS in physics and astronomy (1992) from Haverford College, Pennsylvania. His research interests are in the areas of radiation and particle transport, linear and nonlinear solvers, algorithms and methods for HPC, and computational coupled physics simulation. He is currently the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) Applications Development focus area deputy in charge of the energy applications portfolio.
