Smarter waste strategies: Helping deliver on the promise of advanced nuclear
At COP28, held in Dubai in 2023, a clear consensus emerged: Nuclear energy must be a cornerstone of the global clean energy transition. With electricity demand projected to soar as we decarbonize not just power but also industry, transport, and heat, the case for new nuclear is compelling. More than 20 countries committed to tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050. In the United States alone, the Department of Energy forecasts that the country’s current nuclear capacity could more than triple, adding 200 GW of new nuclear to the existing 95 GW by mid-century.
Conference on Nuclear Training and Education: A Biennial International Forum (CONTE 2025)
Amanda Donges is the senior vice president of Teaching & Learning and executive director, National Academy for Nuclear Training (NANT) for the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) in Atlanta, Georgia.
INPO, sponsored by the commercial nuclear industry, is an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the highest levels of safety and reliability - to promote excellence - in the operation of commercial nuclear power plants.
Ms. Donges joined INPO in September 2007 and was elected vice president in November 2020 and senior vice president in May 2024. Previous positions include vice president of Industry Performance, director of Plant Operations, manager of Industry Leadership and Performance Improvement, organizational effectiveness leader, corporate secretary and staff assistant to the CEO, manager of Events Analysis, and Operations evaluator.
From September 2018 until September 2019, Ms. Donges participated in an on-loan assignment to Xcel Energy as a general manager of nuclear fleet operations.
Prior to joining INPO, Ms. Donges served in the U.S. Navy's nuclear power program.
Ms. Donges received a Bachelor of Science degree in quantitative economics from the United States Naval Academy. She also received a pressurized water reactor (PWR) senior reactor operator certification in 2008.
