India’s PFBR attains criticality at last
Prime Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed it “a proud moment for India” when on April 6 the 500-MWe, sodium-cooled Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) achieved initial criticality. This milestone, which comes some 22 years after the continually delayed PFBR project began, marks India’s entrance into the second stage of its three-stage nuclear program, which has the ultimate goal of supporting the country’s nuclear power program with its significant thorium reserves.
Advances in Nuclear Fuel Management (ANFM 2025)
Lauren Wirick serves as the Director of Fuel Engineering Technologies at Westinghouse Electric Company, accountable for developing simulation code applications to support reactor core safety analysis, core surveillance, and core monitoring. Prior to her current role, Lauren has held various leadership positions in the energy sector, specializing in design engineering, field services, manufacturing, and research and development of nuclear fuel technologies. Lauren holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a graduate certificate in nuclear engineering and operations from the University of Pittsburgh. She lives in Wexford, PA, with her husband, two daughters, and dog Akira.
