AI at work: Southern Nuclear’s adoption of Copilot agents drives fleet forward
Southern Nuclear is leading the charge in artificial intelligence integration, with employee-developed applications driving efficiencies in maintenance, operations, safety, and performance.
The tools span all roles within the company, with thousands of documented uses throughout the fleet, including improved maintenance efficiency, risk awareness in maintenance activities, and better-informed decision-making. The data-intensive process of preparing for and executing maintenance operations is streamlined by leveraging AI to put the right information at the fingertips for maintenance leaders, planners, schedulers, engineers, and technicians.
Advances in Nuclear Fuel Management (ANFM 2025)
Shawn is the General Manager of Fuels and Digital Engineering at GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH), where she leads a diverse portfolio of engineering design, analysis, and product development initiatives. Her teams support both the existing fleet and new nuclear plant designs, with a focus on ensuring the safe, efficient operation of nuclear power plants and delivering innovative solutions.
Throughout her career, she has performed or led a wide range of applications, including fuel cycle optimization, reload licensing, safety analysis, fuel performance, shielding, control blade design, fluence evaluations, dose analyses, and emergent issue resolution. Shawn graduated from the University of Michigan with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences.
Outside of her professional role, Shawn lives in Wilmington, North Carolina with her husband Charlie and their three children, Henry, Pippa, and Rosie. She is actively involved in her community, serving on the board of Communities in Schools of Cape Fear and coaching Science Olympiad. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and performing as a clarinetist with the Wilmington Symphonic Winds.
