The mission of the Decommissioning and Environmental Sciences (DES) Division is to promote the development and use of those skills and technologies associated with the use of nuclear energy and the optimal management and stewardship of the environment, sustainable development, decommissioning, remediation, reutilization, and long-term surveillance and maintenance of nuclear-related installations, and sites. The target audience for this effort is the membership of the Division, the Society, and the public at large.

General Atomics’ SiGA-cladded test rods complete irradiation testing in the ATR
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) announced last week that unfueled test rods featuring the company’s SiGA fuel cladding—made of a silicon carbide composite material—successfully survived 120 days of irradiation in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory.

The Honorable Jeffrey S. Merrifield, the leader of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP’s Energy practice group and a former presidential appointee to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is widely recognized as an international thought leader on nuclear power and the deployment of complex energy systems for the avoidance of carbon generation.

Jeff's well-received corporate executive experience as well as media and public speaking capabilities also provide a significant resource for the advocacy of common-sense and cost-effective solutions.
