This year the American Nuclear Society’s Nuclear and Emerging Technologies for Space (NETS 2023) conference, which will be held May 7–11, 2023, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, is focusing on powering the next era of space exploration through nuclear-enabled technologies and is sure to be the can’t-miss event of the year for those in the aerospace community.
Anyone who wishes to present a paper at NETS 2023 needs to submit an abstract by February 1 or contact technical program chair Sebastian Corbisiero and/or the ANS meetings department (firstname.lastname@example.org) if a submission is imminent but requires further internal review. Corbisiero will work out extensions with authors on a case-by-case basis.
The general chair of this year’s conference is Steven Johnson from Idaho National Laboratory. Assisting in the planning of the meeting are two deputy general chairs, Andrew Zillmer from INL and Amanda Robertson from Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The meeting website includes a wealth of information for potential attendees, including the schedule at a glance and up-to-date information about the plenary sessions. Johnson, in his welcome message posted on the NETS website, describes the themes of the plenary sessions that will be hosted each morning at NETS. He says, “One plenary session will be devoted to a historical look at the missions that were nuclear-enabled such as Voyager, New Horizons, Mars 2020, and with an eye towards the future, Dragon Fly.” He adds, “Another plenary session will focus on the future with a closer look at nuclear reactors such as the Advanced Test Reactor and the Transient Test Reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory and the reactor test bed being established for testing small modular and microreactors in the next few years.”
NETS is the main way for ANS to connect nuclear engineers, scientists, and students with space exploration missions in conjunction with NASA. Come join ANS and the Aerospace Division in Idaho Falls this spring for a program of exciting discussions and presentations about the next era of space exploration.
