Coming up soon: Global 2026
Global is a series of international conferences covering aspects of nuclear technology including the full nuclear fuel cycle and reactor systems. This year, Global 2026—which is sponsored by the American Nuclear Society’s Fuel Cycle & Waste Management Division—is taking place August 16–20 in Chicago, Ill.
The details: The theme of this year’s conference is “Deploying Sustainable Nuclear Fuel Cycles.” To that end, experts from a variety of disciplines will share their insights on topics as varied as advanced nuclear fuel cycles; advanced reactors; novel uses of nuclear technology; radioactive waste management; safety, safeguards and nonproliferation; security (both physical and cyber); economics; institutional and legal considerations; facility siting; environmental remediation and decommissioning; and workforce training.
Global, as its name suggests, has an international scope. Aside from ANS, the conference is organized by the Atomic Energy Society of Japan, the Canadian Nuclear Society, the French Nuclear Society (Sfen), the Korean Nuclear Society, and the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management.
Representatives and leaders from KAERI, the Institute of Science Tokyo, Orano USA, Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories, Centrus Energy, Oklo, SHINE Technologies, Sargent & Lundy, and Curio, among many others, will speak to their respective progress on fuel cycle development over the course of the week.
Aside from plenaries and technical sessions, the conference will also offer the opportunity for attendees to participate in three workshops and two tours. The workshops will tackle Cyclus, Domestic MC&A MAPIT, and reprocessing technologies. The tours will visit the facilities of SHINE and Argonne National Laboratory.
On the SHINE tour, attendees will visit Chrysalis, a currently under construction facility that will ultimately house eight fusion neutron sources, and FLARE (Fusion Linear Accelerator for Radiation Effects), which the company uses to test and validate materials for aerospace, defense, and advanced energy applications.
On the Argonne tour, attendees will visit the Advanced Photon Source, Activated Materials Laboratory, Aurora Exascale Supercomputer, Nuclear Energy Exhibition Hall, Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop and Natural Convection Shutdown Heat Removal Test Facility, and Building 206—which houses three experimental test assemblies: PELICAN, SMT-2/3, and CAFÉ.
