Special ANS event: “Past DOE Nuclear Energy Officials Roundtable”

The American Nuclear Society is hosting a special online panel discussion featuring former officials from the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. The event, “Past DOE Nuclear Energy Officials Roundtable,” will be held on Monday, May 20, from 11:00 to 12:00 p.m. (EDT).

ANS is holding the webinar in honor of Peter Lyons (1943-2021), an ANS Fellow who also was served as assistant secretary of energy for the Office of Nuclear Energy from 2011 to 2015.

What it’s about: The roundtable will feature six leaders who have helped shape the current state of innovation and growth for nuclear energy. The panelists will offer perspectives on their experiences and on where the nuclear industry goes from here.

Submit questions: Participants are encouraged to submit questions for the panelists in advance of the event via email.

Panelists:

  • Rita Baranwal, senior vice president at Westinghouse Electric Company who is leading the development and deployment of the AP300 small modular reactor. Baranwal has more than 25 years of experience in the nuclear industry, including previously serving as an assistant secretary of energy for the Office of Nuclear Energy.
  • Kathryn Huff, professor in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where her work focuses on modeling and simulation of advanced nuclear reactors and fuel cycles. Huff recently left the position of assistant secretary of energy for the Office of Nuclear Energy and previously served as principal deputy assistant secretary and acting assistant secretary in the office.
  • John Kotek, senior vice president for policy and public affairs at the Nuclear Energy Institute and president of Nuclear Matters, a coalition of nuclear energy advocates. Kotek previously served as an assistant secretary of energy for the Office of Nuclear Energy.
  • Warren “Pete” Miller, professor of practice in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A%M University and a member of the External Advisory Board of Kairos Power. Miller is a former assistant secretary of energy for the Office of Nuclear Energy.
  • Dennis Spurgeon, longtime senior energy executive in both government and private industry. Among Spurgeon’s positions have been assistant secretary of energy for the Office of Nuclear Energy, assistant director for fuel cycle in the Energy Research and Development Administration, executive vice president and chief operating officer of USEC Inc., and leader of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership.
  • William Magwood IV, director-general of the Nuclear Energy Agency, former commissioner with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and former director of the civilian nuclear energy program for the Department of Energy.
