Utah-based EnergySolutions announced on January 15 that it has submitted a notice of intent to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, confirming that the company plans to submit an application for a “major licensing action” for new nuclear generation at the closed Kewaunee nuclear power plant in Wisconsin. Applications for an early site permit, construction permit, or combined license are currently being evaluated, the company said.
EnergySolutions announced in May 2025 that it is working with Milwaukee-based utilities company WEC Energy Group to explore new nuclear generation at the Kewaunee site. EnergySolutions has been decommissioning Kewaunee, a two-loop 574-MWe pressurized water reactor located about 27 miles southeast of Green Bay, Wis., after acquiring the plant from Dominion Energy in 2022.
Multiphase project: EnergySolutions said it is carrying out a “structured, multiphase project” that includes initial planning and scoping activities. The company is to conduct in-depth studies to demonstrate the site’s suitability for new nuclear construction, a prerequisite to the development and securing of NRC approvals for the project.
According to its letter of intent, EnergySolutions plans to submit an application by June 2028.
Neither EnergySolutions nor WEC have indicated what reactor technology will be pursued for the site.
