Connecticut signs agreement with NRC for handling of nuclear material

Connecticut has become the 40th state in the union to sign an agreement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that gives the state regulatory authority to manage certain radioactive materials within its borders.

Under the final agreement signed by NRC Chair David Wright and Connecticut Gov. Edward Lamont, which was published in the Federal Register earlier today and goes into effect September 30, the NRC will transfer 104 specific licenses for radioactive materials over to Connecticut’s jurisdiction. However, the NRC will retain control over Dominion Energy’s Millstone-2 and -3 nuclear reactors.

The NRC’s Agreement State program allows certain states to enter into a contract with the NRC that gives the states the authority to license and inspect byproduct, source, or special nuclear materials within their state lines.

Before signing the agreement, the NRC determined that Connecticut’s radiation control program is sufficient to protect public health and safety and complies with the NRC’s regulations.
