Rep. Eric Burlison (R., Mo.), the chairman of the U.S. House Oversight and Accountability Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs, has announced a hearing on “The New Atomic Age: Advancing America’s Energy Future.”

The hearing will take place on Tuesday, July 22, at 1:00 pm (ET). Witnesses include Alex Epstein, president and founder of the Center for Industrial Progress, and Joshua Smith, energy policy lead at the Abundance Institute.

Details: According to the chairman’s office, the hearing will explore recent developments in nuclear energy technology, the commercial viability of advanced reactors, supply chain challenges, and policy pathways for Congress to strengthen nuclear power in the United States.

A memo circulated alongside the announcement states that the hearing will focus on “small and micro modular reactors” and how such reactors “can expand nuclear power generation in the United States and provide safe, reliable, and effective energy production.” The hearing will also “examine hurdles the nuclear power industry faces in obtaining secure nuclear fuel sources and other important issues relating to the expansion of nuclear power in the United States.”

Regulations under scrutiny: “The hard truth is that excessive regulations and red tape from previous administrations have stifled private-sector innovation, preventing us from fully unleashing America’s energy potential,” said Burlison in a July 15 statement. These comments echo the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce regulatory barriers and accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies, as illustrated in a spate of executive orders issued earlier this year.

The Congressman also emphasized how advanced reactors could make energy “more accessible, more affordable, and more abundant” for Americans.
