As established by a commercial payload agreement, a radioisotope heating unit (RHU) developed by Zeno Power will be onboard one of Firefly Aerospace’s existing Blue Ghost missions to the near side of the moon as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services, the companies announced yesterday.

Zeno, which has already been working on an americium-241–fueled radioisotope power system for Harmonia RPS, will provide a lightweight, compact 5-Wt Am-241 RHU that includes communications, electrical power, command and data handling, and thermal management subsystems.

Zeno Power announced today that it is restoring hot cell infrastructure at the Vallecitos Nuclear Center to produce radioisotope power systems (RPSs) for use in extreme environments.

“The facility is initially supporting production of strontium-90–fueled nuclear batter[ies] for undersea applications,” said Tyler Bernstein, Zeno cofounder and CEO. “Zeno is also scoping options as it seeks to rapidly scale production of nuclear batteries for space domains.”

Zeno Power announced on its LinkedIn page and on Twitter on April 26 that it has raised $20 million in Series A funding, led by Tribe Capital, with participation from DCVC, 1517 Fund, AIN Ventures, and Pallas Advisors.
