Washington, D.C. — The American Nuclear Society (ANS) applauds the U.S. Senate's confirmation of Theodore “Ted” Garrish as Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

“On behalf of over 11,000 professionals in the fields of nuclear science and technology, the American Nuclear Society congratulates Mr. Garrish on being confirmed by the Senate to once again lead the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy,” said ANS President H.M. "Hash" Hashemian.

Garrish brings more than four decades of experience in energy policy and nuclear affairs. He previously served as Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy under President Ronald Reagan from 1987 to 1989 and most recently as Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at DOE from 2018 to 2021. His long public service career also includes roles as DOE General Counsel, as Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs, and as the principal deputy director for the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. During his most recent tenure, he played a key role in advancing civil nuclear cooperation agreements with key allies, including Poland and Romania.

“We look forward to Mr. Garrish’s tenure as ‘NE-1’ and are confident he will carry on the bipartisan tradition of advancing nuclear energy’s critical role in deploying advanced reactors and securing abundant, reliable, and emissions-free nuclear energy for Americans and the world,” said Craig Piercy, CEO and Executive Director of ANS. “His extensive experience and steady leadership will be essential as the DOE works to modernize its nuclear infrastructure, strengthen international partnerships, and accelerate the commercial deployment of first-of-a-kind reactors.”

“ANS stands ready to support the Office of Nuclear Energy’s mission and looks forward to working with Assistant Secretary Garrish to ensure a strong future for nuclear energy in the United States and beyond,” said Piercy.
