The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will host a hybrid public workshop on September 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EDT) to discuss its activities for the safe and secure use of artificial intelligence in NRC-regulated activities.

The workshop will be held in person and online and will be a forum for the public and others to discuss the regulatory and technical aspects of AI use in nuclear applications.

The agenda for the upcoming workshop, along with information about the previous five workshops, can be found on the NRC website. All participants in the workshop must first register to participate.

The setup: Soon after the workshop begins, NRC chair David Wright will have a fireside chat with Maria Korsnick, president and CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute, on the challenges and opportunities of integrating AI technologies into the nuclear sector.

The workshop will also feature updates on implementing the NRC’s AI Project Plan, insights into the agency’s use of AI, and presentations by industry leaders and academic experts on the development and application of AI in nuclear contexts.

The workshop aims to collect feedback from participants to inform future regulatory approaches as AI continues to evolve within the nuclear industry.

History: This is the sixth in the NRC’s workshop series for agency staff and stakeholders to explore advancements in AI technologies and their impacts on nuclear safety and regulation.
