The Utilities Service Alliance and Curio have signed a memorandum of understanding that may lead to future supplier-partner agreements between USA’s utility members and Curio.

USA is a nonprofit cooperative whose members are electric utilities that own or operate nuclear power plants. Curio is an advanced technology company focused on closing the nuclear fuel cycle, with plans to recycle used fuel and provide next-generation fuels. The MOU was announced last week during the annual USA Nuclear Generator & Supplier Executive Summit in Nashville, Tenn.

“The MOU between Curio and Utilities Service Alliance represents a bold step toward securing a sustainable future for nuclear energy,” said Karen Fili, USA president and CEO. “By leveraging Curio’s advanced technology and vision, we’re opening the door to new opportunities for our members—enhancing economic value, strengthening supply chain resilience, and supporting innovation that aligns with USA’s unwavering commitment to our nuclear future.”

Next step: As part of this MOU and as Curio's products and services become available, the parties intend to enter good-faith negotiations to establish a written supplier partner agreement for discounted uranium feedstocks and waste minimization services. Curio’s NuCycle technology aims to reduce high-level waste by up to 97 percent.

Other agreements: Curio has previously announced MOUs for recycling and other services with Energy Northwest (a USA member utility), Orano, Nano Nuclear, Lightbridge, and others. Curio said it has also signed R&D partnerships with four U.S. national laboratories: Idaho, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, and Sandia.
