The latest report from the University of Michigan Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program’s Technology Assessment Project (TAP) will be the focus of a webinar on December 11, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. (EST).

Sponsored by TAP in partnership with the university’s Fastest Path to Zero Initiative, the event will discuss findings in the report, The Reactor Around the Corner: Understanding Advanced Nuclear Energy Futures.

Participants can register for the webinar here.

The webinar: Report authors Nora Lewis, Txai Sibley, Nicholas Stubblefield, Michael Redmond, Molly Kleinman, Shobita Parthasarathy, and Denia Djokić will be on hand to talk about their research findings regarding the social, environmental, ethical, equity, economic, and geopolitical implications of advanced nuclear energy technologies, especially small modular reactors, based on their analogical case study approach. They will also discuss policy recommendations for the governance of SMRs and the uranium supply chain.

Implications? The authors anticipate that SMRs and advanced reactors have the potential to benefit society, but without “robust governance frameworks,” this technology is “likely to have significant negative social impacts,” the report states.

The report’s recommendations are crafted to “maximize the potential benefits and minimize the likely harms of the widespread adoption of these new nuclear energy technologies.”

More information: Questions about the webinar should be directed to the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program via email. Registrants can watch the webinar live and will also have access to a recording of the event.
