The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has renewed the operating licenses of NextEra Energy’s Point Beach Units 1 and 2, for an additional 20 years. The Two Rivers, Wis., plant will now be able to operate into the 2050s.
These subsequent license renewals mark the second time the reactors have received life extensions, which are now set to expire in October 2050 for Unit 1 and March 2053 for Unit 2.
The NRC’s SLR application proceeded on two separate tracks. In August 2025, the NRC issued a final supplemental environmental impact statement and a supplement to its May 2022 safety evaluation.
Point Beach is home to two 615-MWe pressurized water reactors. Unit 1 first received approval in 1970, followed by Unit 2 in 1972. The licenses were renewed for the first time in 2005.
