Longtime nuclear industry executive Chris Mudrick has been named the new chief nuclear officer at Constellation Energy, effective September 29. He will take over the position from Dave Rhoades, who is retiring from the role.

History: Mudrick has been Constellation’s senior vice president of generation growth since December 2024, a position that marked his return to the company after serving as executive vice president and CNO at Bruce Power in Ontario, Canada, for more than four years. Prior to joining Bruce Power, Mudrick was at Constellation/Exelon for more than 32 years, ending his time there as senior vice president of operations–East and chief operating officer. He began his career with the company as a nuclear power plant operator in Pennsylvania in 1987.

Constellation noted in the announcement, “Since rejoining Constellation, he has overseen the Crane Clean Energy Center restart and supported numerous growth and data economy initiatives.”

Outgoing: Rhoades will retire at the end of this year after nearly 40 years of service to Constellation. He has been CNO since 2021. Other positions he has held over the years include plant manager, site vice president, senior vice president of operations support, and COO of fleet operations.

Constellation’s announcement emphasized the many operational innovations the company experienced under Rhoades’s leadership, resulting in improved performance and capacity factors across the fleet. During his tenure, Rhoades oversaw efforts to digitalize equipment at Constellation’s nuclear plants and led the charge to shorten the duration of refueling outages.

“Outages frequently took over a month to complete years ago, and Rhoades’s focus on safely streamlining activities and detailed planning has helped reduce the average timeframe to less than three weeks,” the company said.

AI race: Constellation president and CEO Joe Dominguez praised both Rhoades and Mudrick. “Dave Rhoades has left an indelible mark on our company and our industry, and his legacy of safety, reliability and error-free operations is unmatched,” he said. “With decades of technical, operational, and leadership experience, Chris Mudrick is uniquely qualified to succeed Dave, preserving and growing America’s largest nuclear fleet to power the nation and help win the AI race.”
