ARC Clean Technology, Deep Atomic partner on SMR deployment
SMR developer Arc Clean Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding with Deep Atomic to jointly explore deployment opportunities across North America.
A June 17 news release outlined how the two companies will collaborate on finding sites where ARC Clean Technology’s small modular reactor, the ARC-100, can support next-generation power for data centers and other AI infrastructure.
A closer look: The ARC-100 is a 100-MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor designed for both on-grid electricity and industrial heat applications. Based on Argonne National Laboratory’s Experimental Breeder Reactor-II, it is designed to operate for more than 20 years without refueling.
The MOU includes a framework for ARC Clean Technology and Deep Atomic to partner on site identification, feasibility assessments, and engagement with potential customers. The companies will also evaluate sites where the ARC-100 could be sited close to Deep Atomic’s hyperscale infrastructure projects.
Quotable: “Our mission is to accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear for 21st-century digital infrastructure,” said William Theron, chief executive at Deep Atomic. “By partnering with ARC, we can offer our customers a pathway to fully decarbonized, 24/7 energy that meets the performance, security, and sustainability needs of AI-era data centers.”
Bob Braun, chief operating officer at ARC Clean Technology, added, “Data centers are rapidly becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing sources of electricity demand. The ARC-100 is ideally suited for this emerging market. . . . We are extremely excited to bring together our technology with Deep Atomic’s expertise in project development for the next generation of AI infrastructure.”
About the companies: ARC Clean Technology has offices in Washington, D.C., and Canada. It also has an MOU with Canadian utility New Brunswick Power, a partner since 2018, and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to explore commercialization opportunities in all of KHNP’s business territories. The trio signed the memorandum in December 2023, and there are plans to deploy an ARC-100 unit at New Brunswick’s Point Lepreau nuclear power plant. The plans are under regulatory review by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
In May, ARC Clean Technology signed an MOU to support Canadian-based Nucleon Energy’s generation sites under development in Texas and Alberta, Canada.
Deep Atomic, headquartered in Switzerland, is an energy infrastructure company specializing in project development services and offering its MK60 light-water SMR design specifically to provide power and cooling for data centers. Each MK60 unit generates up to 60 MWe and provides an additional 60 MW of cooling capacity.
