Amy Whitley has been selected by the American Nuclear Society and American Society of Mechanical Engineers to receive the 2025 ANS/ASME Barry Sloane Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, which was established in 2024 to recognize an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in mechanical or nuclear engineering, honors contributions of the late Barry Sloane, a past member of the ANS/ASME Joint Committee on Nuclear Risk Management (JCNRM).

Thanks to the generous donations of the Sloane family and many JCNRM members, both ANS and ASME will be able to offer separate $2,500 scholarships to two different undergraduate students for the next four years. The scholarship will be extended if additional donations are received.

Whitley is a senior at North Carolina State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering. She

expects to earn her bachelor’s degree in the spring of 2026 and plans to continue directly on to graduate school. She is currently working as an undergraduate researcher in a probability risk assessment group at NC State and is interning with the PRA group at Westinghouse.

Both of these experiences have involved applying new PRA methodology to advanced reactors. In addition to being an ANS student member, Whitley is a member of the Women in Nuclear and ANS chapters at NC State, academics chair of the STEM sorority Alpha Omega Epsilon, vice president of the Women in Physics Club, and a member of the Raleigh Civic Symphony.

Barry Sloane (September 22, 1952–October 14, 2019) provided many years of dedicated service, expertise, and leadership in advancing the impact of the ASME/ANS PRA standard for nuclear power plant applications. He had been an active member of the standards program since 2000, when he joined the project team on PRA standards. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of subcommittees on standards planning, technology, and interpretation. He also chaired the Subcommittee on Applications and the Subcommittee on Standards Development and was a member of the ANS/ASME JCNRM.
