The 2025 ANS election results are in!

Spring marks the passing of the torch for American Nuclear Society leadership. During this election cycle, ANS members voted for the newest vice president/president-elect, treasurer, and six board of director positions (four U.S., one non-U.S., one student). New professional division leadership was also decided on in this election, which opened February 25 and closed April 15. About 21 percent of eligible members of the Society voted—a similar turnout to last year.
Meet the vice president/president elect
The next vice president/president-elect will be Mark Peters, an ANS member since 2007. Peters is the president and CEO of the MITRE Corporation, a nonprofit organization that manages federally funded research and development centers. Peters previously was the executive vice president for national laboratory management and operations at Battelle. Prior to that he was the director of Idaho National Laboratory for five years.
“I am honored to serve as vice president/president-elect of the American Nuclear Society, an organization at the forefront of advancing nuclear science and technology for the betterment of others. Together with the ANS community, it is my privilege to champion innovation and collaboration that will support our nation and people,” Peters said upon being elected.
Peters will succeed current ANS vice president/president-elect H. M. “Hash” Hashemian, who will assume the office of president following the upcoming ANS Annual Conference in mid-June.
The next treasurer
Julie Ezold was elected for the two-year term as treasurer. An ANS member since 1988, Ezold is a technical advisor at the DOE’s Office of Science Isotope R&D and Production program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She previously has held roles as a waste management/environmental restoration engineer and a nuclear criticality safety engineer. Ezold just completed a three-year term on the ANS Board of Directors this past June.
In her candidacy statement, Ezold spoke to her long history with ANS and plans for the future, saying, “For more than 30 years I have been active in the Society, beginning as a student and now serving in leadership roles at the national level. During this time, I have witnessed many changes to the organization, and in the past few years ANS has become more diverse and stronger. To continue this trajectory, the Society must manage its assets effectively, wisely, and in a transparent manner. I believe ANS has much to offer, not only to its greatest asset, its members, but also to the public.”
The newest directors
The six new directors have been elected to the ANS Board of Directors from a pool of 14:
Todd Allen, an ANS member since 1991, is chair of the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Department at the University of Michigan.
John Kotek, an ANS member since 2017, is senior vice president of policy and public affairs at the Nuclear Energy Institute.
Kathryn McCarthy, an ANS member since 1979, is director of the U.S. ITER Project at ORNL.
Grace Stanke, an ANS member since 2019, is a nuclear fuels engineer at Constellation.
Sama Bilbao y León, the non-U.S. director, has been an ANS member since 1995 and is director general of the World Nuclear Association.
Julia Marshall, the student director, has been an ANS member since 2021 and is a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
