Governing Magazine Op-Ed: States need clean air standards including nuclear

A new "Voices of the Governing Institute" opinion piece on the Governing magazine website by past ANS President Donald R. Hoffman and Dr. Peter Lyons, former Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, encourages state-level policymakers to adopt clean air standards as opposed to renewable standards.

"State lawmakers and policymakers across the country have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our air quality, economy and standard of living," they say, by employing all available carbon-free resources, including nuclear energy.

The article is part of their efforts as co-chairs of the American Nuclear Society's Special Committee on Nuclear in the States. "While most states have adopted renewable-energy standards, few have created comprehensive clean-energy standards that allow for all low-carbon sources, including nuclear, to be economically employed," they write.

The article encourages state policymakers who would like assistance with their energy policy development to contact them at nucleartoolkit@ans.org.
