Day Two: ANS at IAEA General Conference

ANS President Andy Klein reported from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on Tuesday. In addition to conference sessions and receptions, Dr. Klein participated a “very useful coordinating meeting with our Nuclear for Climate partners” on Monday.

ANS is one of the lead Nuclear for Climate partners, among nearly 150 organizations worldwide. Those attending the meeting approved a plan that continues the group’s successful social media efforts encouraging and supporting nuclear energy among the necessary tools to protect the world’s climate. A delegation of European Nuclear Society Young Generation Network (ENS YGN) will be representing Nuclear for Climate at a booth at COP22 in Morocco in November.

“Two of the important messages I heard yesterday were that nuclear needs to be part of the world’s energy future and that the job of decarbonizing the electricity and transportation industries can’t be achieved without a large portion of nuclear energy,” Klein said.

ANS representative Paul Dickman and Dr. Klein participated in the World Council of Isotopes Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday. They are working toward the 9th International Conference on Isotopes to be held in Doha, Qatar, in November 2017. Dr. Klein reported that “the conference is moving along well and the venue promises to be spectacular. The technical program is beginning to shape up and our members should look for the call for papers for the meeting over the next month or so.”

Dr. Klein also met with International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC) members to discuss future collaboration.
