Laura Holgate Confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to IAEA with ANS Support

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) applauds the confirmation of Laura S. Holgate today as Ambassador of the United States of America in the Vienna Office of the United Nations, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In April, the presidents of ANS and the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) sent a letter to Congress urging Holgate’s nomination, noting her as an “expert in nuclear security and preventing the development and use of weapons of mass destruction.”

Filling the vacancy of U.S. Ambassador to the IAEA re-establishes the ability of the U.S. to influence international nuclear nonproliferation efforts such as the Iran Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons technology and materials.
