Speakers Bureau members make Engineers Week presentations

ANS Speakers Bureau members presented nuclear science and technology information to over 1,700 people during Engineers Week.

Maggie Flicker of the University of Texas at Austin made two presentations. The first event was given during Girls Day at the University. This is an international event celebrated during Engineers Week each year that introduces young girls to the field of engineering and STEM. The event was a huge success with a turnout of over a thousand people.

The second event was also held at the university, and focused on the explanation of fission chain reaction and benefits of nuclear power to an audience of over 600 people. ANS Did You Know? Bookmarks and Atoms Family stickers were handed out at both events.

C. Brian Meadors visited the Alabama School of Fine Arts during Engineers Week where he presented to over a hundred math and science students. The presentation included slides, a video of mousetrap and ping-pong ball fission, and large props to show how a pellet of Uranium generates the same amount of electricity as three barrels of oil or 42 cubic feet of coal. Meadors said he was impressed by their knowledge of nuclear energy and the array of questions from the students ranging from reactor physics to the storage of spent fuel at Yucca Mountain. The students also asked about careers in nuclear energy and the future of nuclear power.
