ANS Member Dr. Paul Wilson Testifies to end Nuclear Moratorium

The state of Wisconsin enacted a moratorium in 1983 that prevents the creation of new nuclear plants until a federal facility is built that is capable of handling all spent nuclear fuel. It also requires that any new nuclear plant be economically advantageous to ratepayers.

ANS member Dr. Paul Wilson testified at a hearing on November 19 to end the moratorium due to Wisconsin's increased reliance on coal-fired power plants that emit carbon into the atmosphere.

Wilson said that current policies actually provide incentives for the emission of airborne pollutants from fossil fuels rather than the generation of small quantities of carefully tracked and well-contained used nuclear fuel.
