The American Nuclear Society sadly announces the passing of ANS Past President Stanley Hatcher on November 30, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Stan was a recognized nuclear industry leader throughout his career and during his retirement. He served as President of the Pacific Nuclear Council in 1994-96, and as President of the American Nuclear Society (1997-98) - one of only two non-Americans ever to hold that office. He was also a Fellow of ANS, as well as numerous Canadian societies.

In 1954, after earning undergraduate degrees in Chemical Engineering from Birmingham University in England, he moved to Canada, where he earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto. He joined Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) in 1958 as a research engineer. His career with AECL spanned 34 years, serving as President of Research and later as CEO, before retiring in 1992.

Stan was recipient of the Ian McRae Award of the Canadian Nuclear Association, and in 2010 he received the prestigious Global Award of the International Nuclear Societies Council.

Funeral services will be held on Monday December 8 at 1:00 p.m., St. Alban the Martyr, 537 Main Street, Glen Williams, ON L7G 3T1.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to St. Alban the Martyr Church.
