      Education, Training & Workforce Development

The Education, Training & Workforce Development Division provides communication among the academic, industrial, and governmental communities through the exchange of views and information on matters related to education, training and workforce development in nuclear and radiological science, engineering, and technology. Industry leaders, education and training professionals, and interested students work together through Society-sponsored meetings and publications, to enrich their professional development, to educate the general public, and to advance nuclear and radiological science and engineering.

Nuclear power resilience in a changing climate

All 92 U.S. power reactors operating today need water—in the right place and at the right time. But extreme weather events, including floods, droughts, hurricanes, and heat waves, upend expectations and demand resilience: the ability to anticipate, accommodate, and recover from adverse impacts.

Resilience was built into today’s nuclear power plants decades ago. Weather data and climate forecasts not available then can be factored into risk analysis now to ensure the plants remain resilient in a changing climate.

Description

This special report addresses the issues of how excess plutonium coming out of the nuclear arsenals of the United States and the former Soviet Union should be handled, how the plutonium being generated and separated in some civilian nuclear fuel cycles should be dealt with, and how the vast amounts of plutonium incorporated in spent fuel from civilian power plants should be approached.

The document contains an executive summary and full panel report as well as three subpanel reports that review current energy and nonproliferation policy issues related to energy and economics; reactors; reprocessing; waste management and disposal; weapons; regulatory and legal matters; environment, safety, and health; and safeguards and security.
