      Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology

      Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology

Organized to promote the advancement of knowledge in the use of nuclear science and technologies in the aerospace application. Specialized nuclear-based technologies and applications are needed to advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace design, engineering and operations to explore planetary bodies in our solar system and beyond, plus enhance the safety of air travel, especially high speed air travel. Areas of interest will include but are not limited to the creation of nuclear-based power and propulsion systems, multifunctional materials to protect humans and electronic components from atmospheric, space, and nuclear power system radiation, human factor strategies for the safety and reliable operation of nuclear power and propulsion plants by non-specialized personnel and more.

Nuclear energy: enabling production of food, fiber, hydrocarbon biofuels, and negative carbon emissions

In the 1960s, Alvin Weinberg at Oak Ridge National Laboratory initiated a series of studies on nuclear agro-industrial complexes1 to address the needs of the world’s growing population. Agriculture was a central component of these studies, as it must be. Much of the emphasis was on desalination of seawater to provide fresh water for irrigation of crops. Remarkable advances have lowered the cost of desalination to make that option viable in countries like Israel. Later studies2 asked the question, are there sufficient minerals (potassium, phosphorous, copper, nickel, etc.) to enable a prosperous global society assuming sufficient nuclear energy? The answer was a qualified “yes,” with the caveat that mineral resources will limit some technological options. These studies were defined by the characteristic of looking across agricultural and industrial sectors to address multiple challenges using nuclear energy.

Light Water Reactor Materials is a textbook that describes the fundamentals of nuclear materials behavior in light water reactors. Both the materials science and nuclear engineering topics needed to understand the behavior of materials in-reactor are covered. Volume II covers specific materials degradation phenomena, such as mechanical property changes, irradiation-induced deformation, corrosion and hydriding, severe accident analysis, and other phenomena that affect in-reactor materials performance, as well as a chapter on fuel performance codes by Y. Rashid.
