We are cleaning up contaminated, unused facilities on the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR). In addition to removing excess facilities, we maintain facilities across ORR that are waiting for disposition. We also provide critical upgrades to extend the life of active, but aging, facilities. This continues the same work done by the former UCOR from 2011 to 2022.

Workers with the EU-21 TCE Project made the final soil shipment from the East Tennessee Technology Park this week. The project began in July 2021 and ultimately shipped more than 102,000 cubic yards of Trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated material both on- and offsite. #EnvironmentalCleanup
Crews are preparing to apply grout and concrete in the hot cell at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory former Radioisotope Development Laboratory site. The work will stabilize the waste and provide shielding for workers entering the cell. Once the grout and concrete are placed, workers will create an access into the cell and continue removing and packaging any remaining waste. #EnvironmentalCleanup

Crews finish cleanup of Oak Ridge National Lab reactor demolition site
U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) crews have completed cleanup associated with the demolition of a major reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Workers finished the teardown of the Low Intensity Test Reactor and disposition of rubble and debris from the facility last fall, achieving an EM priority that year. However, the reactor vessel remained on the building’s footprint until it could be shipped for final disposition offsite.

The iconic 3039 stack has towered over the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) since the lab’s earliest days, providing ventilation to operations at the site. However, recent inspections revealed portions of the landmark had deteriorated and required repairs. The Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) performs periodic inspections of the structure to identify any defects or other issues.

Oak Ridge upgrades ensure reliable waste treatment operations
The Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management and contractor UCOR recently completed an extensive piping replacement project to extend the life of the Liquid and Gaseous Waste Operations (LGWO) system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Replacing the piping and completing other upgrades alleviates the recurring need for maintenance and repair of aging infrastructure built many decades ago and ensures the system’s reliability.

At a ceremony in New York yesterday, United Cleanup Oak Ridge (UCOR) was recognized with the 2024 Top Workplaces USA award. The award, from USA Today and Energage, was based solely on feedback provided by the UCOR workforce. UCOR is the lead cleanup contractor for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge Reservation.
