Assistant Professor in Nuclear Engineering

University of Utah; Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of UtahSalt Lake City, UT

Posted October 29, 2025Reference ID: PRN01428CF

Description

The University of Utah’s Nuclear Engineering Program (UNEP), part of the John and Marcia Price College of Engineering, is seeking applications for one full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Nuclear Engineering. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2026.

A successful candidate will join a dynamic and growing program housed in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CVEEN). CVEEN is one of seven rapidly expanding departments within the College, with a 50% growth in tenure-track faculty over the last decade and research expenditures now exceeding $81 million annually. The department currently has 23 tenure-track faculty and three lecturers, with active searches underway for additional positions. CVEEN maintains a robust research portfolio, with over $19 million in external funding in 2024. More information is available at www.civil.utah.edu.

UNEP currently features four tenure-track faculty in addition to affiliated faculty from across Engineering, Science, and Medicine, and strong collaborations with national labs, industry, and international partners. UNEP offers an undergraduate minor, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and operates an NRC-licensed 100 kW Modified Mark I TRIGA Reactor with state-of-the-art controls and facilities. Research spans nuclear energy, advanced reactor designs, nuclear safety, fuel cycles, nuclear medicine, advanced modeling and simulation, and more. Faculty have access to premier university research facilities, including the Nanofab materials characterization center (https://www.nanofab.utah.edu).

We welcome applicants in all areas of nuclear engineering research with an emphasis in the following areas:

  • Thermal-hydraulics
  • Nuclear fuel cycles for conventional and advanced energy systems
  • Nuclear fusion science and technology

Candidates with strong fundamental skills and interest in multidisciplinary collaboration are especially encouraged. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering or a closely related field by the date of hire, demonstrate strong communication skills, and be prepared to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

The University of Utah, an R1 research institution and member of the Big 12 Conference, is located in Salt Lake City, at the base of the Wasatch Mountains—an area renowned for outdoor recreation, commercialization, and innovation. Utah is ranked the Best State to Live In (US News & World Report, 2024), with the University recognized as the #1 Public University in the West (Wall Street Journal, 2024).

Application Materials:

Submit electronically (PDF format): cover letter, CV, statements of research and teaching interests, up to three relevant publications, and contact information for three references at https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/190413. Initial review begins December 2, 2025; applications accepted until the position is filled.
