The theme of the IHLRWM 2011 Conference was "Progress Made and Challenges Ahead for Safe Disposal of High Level Radioactive Waste." The meeting addressed scientific, technical, social, and regulatory aspects of the entire back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, including waste generation, transportation, storage, treatment, disposal, regulation, and stakeholder involvement.
There were 195 papers/presentations organized into the following 12 topical areas: (1) Total Repository System, Generic and Site-Specific; (2) Natural Systems, Generic and Site Specific; (3) Engineered Systems; (4) Biosphere; (5) Regulatory Topics; (6) Institutional Topics-Lessons Learned; (7) Interim Storage of High Level Waste; (8) Advanced Fuel Cycles: Impacts on Waste Management; (9) High-Level Radioactive Waste Transportation; (10) Security, Safeguards, and Non-Proliferation; (11) Retrievability and Reversibility; and (12) Fuel Cycle and Disposal System Optimization.
