N16, Nuclear Criticality Safety

The N16 Committee has the following scope of activity:

To develop standards for determining the potential for nuclear criticality of fissile material outside reactors, for the prevention of accidental criticality, and for coping with accidents should they occur.

The N16 consensus committee oversees one subcommittee. This committee is ANS-8, Fissionable Material Outside Reactors. Taken from their scope, this committee aims "to establish standards providing guidance in the prevention of nuclear chain reactions in all procedures for handling, storing, transporting, processing, and treating fissionable nuclides."
