Past President James Lake presented ANS views on the Nation's need for nuclear energy to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources on July 18. In his remarks, Lake stated that "ANS recommends the reinstatement of the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology to the Assistant Secretary level..." He stressed the contributions of nuclear energy to the economy and the need for Congressional support for funding of future nuclear technology research, future work force and the benefit of humanity.

McNeill Honored as Nuclear Statesman (5/30/01)

Mr. Corbin A. McNeill, Jr., was presented with the Henry DeWolf Smyth Award on May 23 during the Nuclear Energy Assembly Conference. The annual conference sponsored by the Nuclear Energy Institute was held in Washington, DC. This is a joint award presented annually to a world nuclear leader by the American Nuclear Society and NEI. ANS President Jim Lake made the presentation to Mr. McNeill.

President Bush Releases National Energy Policy (5/17/01)
|
|
President Bush today released the National Energyy Policy report prepared by the National Energy Policy Development Group. In his presentation, President Bush stated the nation must conserve energy, diversify energy sources, and provide a comprehensive delivery system for electricity. Nuclear power was listed among the energy alternatives as a safe resource that does not polllute the air, is produced at a reasonable cost and emits no greenhouse gas. Bush stated that the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have been instructed to move forward to resolve the waste disposal issue.
ANS President James Lake issued a statement supporting the Bush Admininstration's National Energy Policy urging Congress to take a leadership role in nuclear energy legislation.

During the hearing to confirm Secretary of Energy nominee, Spencer Abraham, Senate Energy committee members repeatedly stressed the importance of a U.S. energy policy that pursued nuclear energy. The recommendation for confirmation of Abraham will go to the Senate for vote when it reconvenes. The ANS Government Affairs Office prepared a report on the hearings.

During the ANS/ENS International Meeting in Washington, DC, Senator Pete V. Domenici received the Henry DeWolf Smyth Nuclear Statesman Award. This award is presented by ANS and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) to recognize outstanding service in developing and guiding peaceful uses of nuclear energy. After receiving the award, Sen. Domenici offered encouraging remarks about future U.S. economic growth. He also reaffirmed that he is on board by saying, "Let's move ahead with nuclear power."

2001 DOE Spending Bill Passed by House Appropriations Subcommittee (6/15/00)

The ANS Washington Office reported that the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee passsed the Department of Energy's 2001 spending bill. It provided $231.8 million for the Office of Nuclear Energy. This is $76 million below the budget request. The full Appropriations Committee will consider the recommendations on Tuesday, June 20.
