IL Governor Signs Bill to Extend Nuclear Energy Production

Tracy Marc|

The Future Energy Jobs Bill (FEJB) that the Illinois General Assembly passed December 1 was officially signed by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner today. The bill will take effect June 1, 2017, and recognizes the clean energy producing benefits nuclear power offers to Illinois residents.

The passage of this bill preserves the production of more than 2,800 megawatts of electricity from the Clinton and Quad Cities facilities. By remaining operational, these two facilities prevent the emission of more than 20 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year.

Illinois is the second state this year to provide incentives for nuclear power alongside solar and wind energy. ANS produced a catalog of state policies in the Nuclear in the States Toolkit, Version 2.0 that outlines ways existing nuclear reactors may remain open to help states to meet clean energy goals.
