NRC Authorizes Permit for New Medical Isotope Facility Construction

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has authorized its staff to issue a construction permit to SHINE Medical Technologies, Inc. for a first-of-a-kind medical isotope production facility in Janesville, Wisconsin. This is the first NRC construction permit issued for a non-energy production facility since 1985.

The facility will enable the production of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) and other medical isotopes used to develop isotope technetium-99, which is used in the United States for diagnostic procedures such as bone scans, brain imaging and cardiac testing.

See ANS Position Statement 30 on U.S. Radioisotope Supply for the Society's stance on medical isotope research and production for medical applications.
