NRC Authorizes New South Texas Project Reactor License

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued a new reactor license for the construction and operation of two Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWR) at the South Texas Project site near Bay City, Texas.

The license includes post-Fukushima requirements for Mitigation Strategies and Spent Fuel Pool Instrumentation and a pre-startup schedule for post-Fukushima aspects of the new reactor’s emergency preparedness plans and procedures.

The application was submitted in 2007 followed by an independent review by the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards for safety and environmental review.

There are two operating reactors already on the site run by the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company.
