Bipartisan Support for Advanced Nuclear Reactor R & D

Today the U.S. Senate (87-4) adopted the Crapo-Whitehouse amendment to The Energy Policy Modernization Act, showing bi-partisan support for advanced nuclear reactor research and development.

“While it still needs to be passed in both the Senate and House, this vote sends a strong message that there is congressional support for nuclear energy advancement,“ said ANS Washington representative Craig Piercy.

Expanded federal engagement in advanced, non-light-water nuclear research and development is critical to expanding nuclear generating capacity as energy demands grow. This act would assist U.S. companies in accessing the full range of technical capabilities within the federal government and national laboratories; accelerate development of world leading scientific user facilities; and promote broader technology commercialization through public-private partnership initiatives.

The bipartisan energy bill was proposed by Senators Chairman Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) in September 2015. The Senate has not discussed a comprehensive, bipartisan energy bill since 2007.
