New York State Recognizes Clean Air Contributions of Nuclear in New Standard

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the state’s Public Service Commission approved a 10-year, $5 billion Clean Energy Fund to grow the state’s economy, and address clean air goals in support of the Clean Energy Standard.
The Clean Energy Standard should include non-emitting generation resources, like the nuclear power facilities in upstate New York. The state’s website says, “Without these plants, the state would lose some of the emission reductions already achieved by the state and possibly lead to an increase of more than 12 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.” New York’s long-term goal is to provide 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

ANS will be working with New York and the rest of the lower 48 states as part of the work of the Special Committee on Nuclear in the States to encourage consideration of new nuclear development, in addition to maintenance of the current fleet.

The Special Committee will be releasing the Nuclear in the States Toolkit on February 8 in Washington, DC. to guide state legislatures with their CPP compliance energy planning.
