U.S. Nuclear Energy Sets New Annual Reliability Record

In the face of climate change, erratic weather patterns and a growing population, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) reported a preliminary estimate that U.S. nuclear energy set a new 91.9 % annual reliability record for producing electricity in 2015. The estimated record, provided by the Nuclear Energy Institute, supersedes a 2007 record by one-tenth of a percent.

There are 99 nuclear plants throughout the United States that are measured for total electricity generated as a percentage of potential generation for an entire calendar year. Despite the closing of the Vermont Yankee plant last year, the amount of electricity generated in 2015 exceeded the amount of electricity produced in 2014.

Nuclear energy continues to serve as a safe, reliable and clean energy source as the states move towards devising their own energy plans to reduce carbon emissions.
