Sec. Shultz, Dr. Drell Receive First Eisenhower Nonproliferation Award

Two pivotal leaders in nonproliferation efforts, former Secretary of State George Shultz and Dr. Sidney Drell, were awarded the first Dwight D. Eisenhower Award by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Policy Division of the American Nuclear Society at the ANS Winter Meeting in Washington, DC., on November 9.

Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Eisenhower, presented the awards with Winter Meeting Chairman Donald R. Hoffman during the Opening Plenary session. They were honored for their historical achievements in nuclear nonproliferation, arms control, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The award recognizes the high standards set out by President Eisenhower in his “Atoms for Peace” speech given to the United Nations in 1953. Secretary Shultz and Dr. Drell have worked together for decades leading U.S. policies, advising domestic leaders, and collaborating with international leaders.
