U.S. Nuclear Capacity Scheduled to Increase

The U.S. Energy Information Administration announced this week that nuclear energy capacity is expected to rise with the scheduled additions of more than 5,000 MW of capacity between 2016 and 2020. This forecast was based on scheduled retirement and additions to date.

Of the thirty states that have nuclear reactors, Illinois has the largest capacity of any state with eleven nuclear energy facilities owned by Exelon Corporation.

The report factored in the closure of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in 2014 but did not account for the recent announcement of the James A. Fitzpatrick plant in New York in late 2016 or early 2017.
