Nuclear Exceeds Production Reliability in July

During the peak summer months of energy production, the country’s 99 reactors produced massive amounts of energy in July, exceeding capacity factor performance. In fact, 92 reactors achieved an average capacity factor of at least 90 percent, with 48 reactors at 100 percent or higher.

A Nuclear Performance Report from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) estimated U.S. nuclear generation in July 2015 was 71.2 billion kilowatt-hours. “These numbers show the industry’s commitment to reliability but to ensuring that there is plentiful emission-free electricity during the peak summer months,” NEI Vice President for Nuclear Operations Joe Pollock said.

The report also highlighted the success of a ten year generation expansion project at the Monticello Generating Plant in Minnesota. After receiving approval from the NRC to increase capacity by 71- megawatts, the plant was briefly at 100 percent producing electrical power at its highest capacity level in the plant’s history.
