The American Nuclear Society announces the passing of ANS Fellow Emeritus William Howard Arnold Jr. on July 16, 2015, at the age of 84.

After dedicating over 35 years to the power industry, Arnold was responsible for the design of Westinghouse’s nuclear rocket engine, NERVA, as well as the development of the famous Mark 48 torpedo, the main weapon of U.S. submarines. While at Westinghouse, he wrote computer software for the analysis and control of neutron diffusion in a nuclear reactor, code which is still in use more than 50 years later.

On September 10, 2004, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. Arnold joined ANS in 1958 and was honored as a Fellow in 1966. He received a Silver Certificate in 1983 for 25 years of continuous membership and valuable contributions. He was also awarded the ANS Reactor Technology Award in 2010.
