ANS Congressional Fellowship Committee Accepting 2016 Applications

The American Nuclear Society is seeking qualified applicants for its 2016 Congressional Fellowship in Washington, DC. The Fellowship provides an ANS member with the opportunity to work either in a congressional office or in a Senate or a House committee, and become a direct contributor to the federal policymaking process.

Along with providing Congress with expertise in nuclear science and technology, the Fellow will support other issues of importance. In return, the Fellow will gain a better understanding of how the legislative process works. The ANS Congressional Fellow is one of nearly 30 scientists and engineers participating annually through the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship Program. The ANS Congressional Fellowship term runs from January through December each year.

Eligibility requirements, selection criteria and instructions on how to apply, along with the Fellowship schedule, can be found on the ANS website under Honors Awards, ANS Congressional Fellowship.

2014 Congressional Fellow, Harsh Desai, had this to say about his experience: “The ANS Congressional Fellowship provides great opportunities for a nuclear professional to participate in federal policymaking and experience firsthand the intersections between federal and state policy, theoretical science, and engineered technology.

As a legislative fellow in Senator Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) office, I was able to utilize my technical knowledge and analytical skills to contribute to and implement policies related to the senator’s energy, defense, transportation, and climate change portfolios.

The ability to understand the role policy plays in the nuclear industry is essential for future leaders. I strongly encourage qualified ANS members to consider applying for this prestigious Fellowship.”

Applications must be received by the Congressional Fellowship Committee no later than April 1, 2015. For more information or questions, please contact Linda Zec, Congressional Fellowship Committee staff liaison, at LZec@ans.org or 708-579-8223.
