Current ANS President.s First Trip to Nation.s Service Academy, Meets with Students in Nuclear Engineering Program

American Nuclear Society (ANS) President Eric P. Loewen, PhD, visited West Point to speak to the cadets at the United States Military Academy on October 14, ANS Interim Executive Director Roger W. Tilbrook announced today. "This is an important milestone for the Society. Dr. Loewen's trip is his first to any of our nation's service academies, and he was able to meet with students in the newly inaugurated nuclear engineering program."

While at West Point, Loewen visited with faculty members and dozens of engineering students and made two addresses, one on the Report of the American Nuclear Society President's Special Committee on Used Nuclear Fuel Management and the second highlighting Severe Accident Regulations and how they relate to our post Fukushima world.

Loewen, when asked about the visit, said, "I'm very impressed by the Academy's nuclear engineering program at the Academy. I was honored to be able to present to the cadets some examples of the work of the American Nuclear Society, which demonstrates the vitality and relevance of our professional Society."

Lt. Colonel Ken Allen, director of the nuclear engineering program, said, "We were happy to be able to extend an invitation to President Loewen to speak to our cadets here. His enthusiasm for both nuclear science and technology and for the American Nuclear Society was gratifying to the participants in our program. We look forward to more visits by the distinguished members of the Society."

Tilbrook concluded, "One of our past presidents presented the charter to the student section at West Point in 2005. We're pleased that Dr. Loewen, an excellent ambassador for ANS, was able to return during his presidency. It's clear how dedicated he is to the Society and to promoting it among the next generation of nuclear scientists and engineers. This visit marks the fourth visit he has made to student groups since taking over the presidency in June of this year."
