Nominee for NRC chairman has extensive educational and research insight

La Grange Park, IL  (May 2, 2006) - The White House has nominated Dale E. Klein to be a commissioner on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and serve as the chairman of the commission.

American Nuclear Society President E. James Reinsch congratulates Klein on his April 27, 2006 nomination.  "As chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Dale Klein will bring tremendous expertise in the field of nuclear science and technology.  His extensive knowledge and background in policy, research and education will help bring insight and understanding to the future of Nuclear Energy."

Upon appointment Klein will serve a five-year-term ending in 2011.  Klein currently serves as Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Chemical and Biological Defense Programs.  Before this he was a Vice Chancellor for Special Engineering Programs for the University of Texas System.

This nomination comes after the current NRC Chair, Nils Diaz, announced he would not seek a third term.  Both Klein and Diaz are members and elected Fellows of the ANS.
