Nuclear landmark status
La Grange Park, IL (April 19, 2006) - The American Nuclear Society presented a Nuclear Historic Landmark Award to the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) in recognition of its engineering, operational and design excellence.
Harold McFarlane, Vice President/President Elect of the American Nuclear Society, presented an inscribed plaque to Fluor Hanford Co., the current contractor for FFTF on Monday April 17, 2006 on the nuclear reservation near Richland, WA.
Known as a flagship for the U.S. Department of Energy Breeder Reactor Program, the FFTF is known around the nation and world as one of the most heavily instrumented fast flux test facilities in the world. Operating as a national research facility it tested different aspects of reactors.
Built in 1978, it operated from 1982 to 1992 testing advanced nuclear fuels, materials, components, power plant operations and reactor safety designs. In 2003 the slow process to deactivate began and continues to this day.
The Fast Flux Text Facility's honors include:
- Federal Design Achievement Award
- Outstanding Engineering Achievement of 1982
- Support to the U.S. Breeder Reactor Program and the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Project
- Only U.S. Liquid metal cooled reactor built and maintained to ASME codes
