Dr. J. Lawrence "Larry" Meem, Jr.

Dr. J. Lawrence "Larry" Meem, Jr. was an ANS Fellow, a charter member, served on the ANS Reactor Operations Division (ROD) Executive Committee from 1964 to 1970, and chaired the ROD in 1970.  He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1939.  Following graduation, Dr. Meem taught for one year at VMI before joining the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.  He received his doctorate in nuclear physics from Indiana University in 1949 and worked for Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 1950-55.  He served as chief reactor scientist for Alco Products, 1955-57.  He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1957 as a professor of nuclear engineering and oversaw the start-up of the University of Virginia Reactor in 1960.  Dr. Meem retired in 1981 and passed on May 8, 2006 at the age of 90.
