American Nuclear Society (ANS) Strategic Plan

Vision

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) will be the recognized credible advocate for advancing and promoting nuclear science and technology.


Mission

ANS provides its members with opportunities for professional development and serves the nuclear community by creating a forum for sharing information and advancements in technology, and by engaging the public and policy makers through communication outreach.

Mission Component 1 - Professional Development

Goals and Strategies

  1. Support the ongoing education and development of the nuclear science and technology workforce on best-in-class scientific and engineering techniques that promote the safe, efficient and effective application of nuclear science and technology.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Maintain ANS and its products as leading, credible and trustworthy sources of information on nuclear science and technology.
    • Provide members with access to information to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities in nuclear science and technology.
    • Promote member participation in high-quality professional development opportunities,
    • Provide members with access to and opportunities for professional licensure an certification programs.
  2. Encourage ANS member professional achievement through recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession of nuclear science and technology.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Develop programs to identify and recognize members for contributions.
    • Promote the accomplishments of the ANS and its members through relevant media channels.

Mission Component 2 - Sharing Information and Advancements in Technology

Goals and Strategies

  1. ANS and its members will be a leading source of nuclear science and technology information within the international science and technology community.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Support member interaction with the international science and technology community in order to establish the ANS as a credible and trustworthy source of information.
    • Establish means for the exchange of technical information between ANS members and professional societies and other stakeholder organizations world-wide.
    • Provide ANS members with forums to discuss topics important to the advancement and application of nuclear science and technology.
  2. ANS will provide technical information in support of all applications of nuclear science and technology.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Undertake initiatives for the exchange of technical information among ANS members on applications of nuclear science and technology.
    • Undertake initiatives for the exchange of technical information with professional societies and other stakeholder organizations world-wide.
    • Provide technical information in support of educational and professional needs for countries planning nuclear science and technology programs.
  3. Produce and maintain ANS consensus standards and promote their adoption as standards of choice by the nuclear science and technology community.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Promote ANS standards to the nuclear science and technology community and other relevant stakeholder groups.
    • Identify and establish relationships with other appropriate organizations for standards development.
    • Identify, evaluate and select standards for revision or development.
    • Increase participation in the ANS standards development.

Mission Component 3 - Engaging the Public

Goals and Strategies

  1. Increase awareness of the safe, effective and efficient applications and contributions of nuclear science and technology and the contributions of individuals working in nuclear science and technology.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Create materials for ANS members to inform the public about nuclear science and technology.
    • Create public communications on significant domestic and international issues relating to nuclear science and technology.
  2. Attract individuals into nuclear science and technology careers.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Promote understanding of careers in nuclear science and technology to the public.
    • Promote understanding of nuclear science and technology topics and careers among educators.
    • Promote understanding of nuclear science and technology topics and careers among elementary and high school students.
    • Promote careers in nuclear science and technology to undergraduate and graduate students.
  3. Increase public awareness of ANS and the Center for Nuclear Science and Technology Information and any relevant products and initiatives as being among the most credible and trusted sources of information on nuclear science and technology.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Develop and maintain brand architecture for ANS and the Center.
    • Create channels for disseminating information focusing on public information on nuclear science and technology.
    • Create public communications on significant domestic and international issues related to nuclear science and technology.
    • Implement a crisis communications program for ANS coordinated with other relevant stakeholders as appropriate.

Mission Component 4 - Engaging the Policy Makers

Goals and Strategies

  1. Obtain policy makers. support for the application of nuclear science and technology to meet societal needs.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Produce programs designed to inform policy makers on issues relevant to nuclear science and technology.
    • Conduct meetings and other interchanges between ANS representatives and policy makers to keep them informed about current nuclear science and technology policy issues and ANS positions
    • Produce programs designed to inform opinion leaders on issues relevant to nuclear science and technology.
  2. Establish the ANS as a credible and trustworthy source of information on nuclear science and technology among policy makers.

    The Society will pursue the following strategies regarding this goal:
    • Conduct regular meetings and other interchanges between ANS representatives and policy makers to keep them informed about nuclear science and technology policy issues and ANS positions.
    • Develop grassroots efforts to help ANS members inform policy makers about nuclear science and technology issues.

ANS Operational Imperatives

To successfully achieve the Mission and Goals and provide for effective execution of the Strategies under this Plan the following operational imperatives will be implemented.

  1. Finalize the creation of the Center for Nuclear Science and Technology Information to advance the understanding of nuclear science and technology.
  2. Pursue ANS' Mission in a financially sound and sustainable manner constantly acting as good stewards of the Society's funds.
  3. Develop a culture of continuous improvement and accountability for the successful achievement of the Mission.
  4. Improve ANS' governance model so that volunteer leadership and staff responsibilities are clear.
  5. Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of ANS' management and organizational structure, and related policies.
  6. Establish and maintain an integrated planning and budgeting process to adapt to the changing environment while maintaining financial sustainability.
  7. Coordinate activities as needed with other domestic and international organizations active in nuclear science and technology.
